Reception desk dimensions

A reception desk has two working heights: a higher counter for standing visitors and a lower surface where staff sit and work. Get those right and the desk works for everyone who approaches it.

ElementStandard dimensionNotes
Visitor counter height40–42 inFor standing visitors; also gives seated staff some privacy

Width, two stationsAbout 120 inStraight desks; L- and U-shaped stations need more depth
Depth24–36 inStraight desks are commonly 30–36 in deep

Accessibility is part of the dimension, not an add-on

Where the public is served, at least one section of counter must be no higher than 36 inches: at least 36 inches long for a parallel approach, or 30 inches long with knee and toe space for a forward approach (ADA Standards §904.4, U.S. Access Board). California applies a 34-inch maximum to that section, according to OfficeSimpli's guide.

Leave room around the desk

Keep the approach clear so visitors can reach the counter without crossing staff circulation, and allow comfortable passage behind the seated receptionist. If the desk anchors a lobby, plan its width with the room: a single station reads well at 60–72 inches, while larger lobbies and two-person coverage call for 90–120 inches.

Made-to-measure example

For comparison, our featured maker Fargo Woodworks builds its Hartford Reception Desk at 84 or 96 inches, for a single or double station, from $3,200 (fargowoodworks.com). Custom dimensions avoid forcing a lobby to fit a stock footprint.
