Boat-shaped conference tables

A boat shape is a rectangle widened at the middle. It seats the same headcount per foot, but the curve turns people slightly toward each other — which is why it earns its place on longer tables.

How boat seating is counted

Exactly like a rectangle: two people for every full spacing along the length, plus one at each end (Paul Downs seating guide). The planner models the centre belly at about 6 inches wider than the ends, so check room width against the centre figure, not the ends. Width still follows length overall — see standard dimensions.

Boat vs rectangle vs racetrack

Compare all three at your headcount in the planner — start with the 16-seat boat plan — and check boardroom sizes if the room is a formal board setting. For 12–16 seat lengths side by side, see tables for 12, 14 and 16 people.

Questions

Conference table sizing, answered

What is a boat-shaped conference table?

A table that is wider in the middle than at the ends. This planner seats it like a rectangle and models the centre belly at about 6 inches wider than the ends.

Boat or rectangle: which seats more?

They seat the same for a given length under the planner rules: two people for every full spacing along the length, plus one at each end. Choose the boat for sightlines, the rectangle for maximum simplicity.

What size boat-shaped table seats 12 people?

At 36 inches per person, 15 feet long; at 30 inches per person, 12 feet 6 inches. Allow for the wider centre when checking room width.

When should I choose a boat shape?

On longer tables (roughly 12 seats and up) where people must see and hear each other down the table; the wider middle angles sightlines inward. For a formal board setting compare boardroom sizes too.
