How we size tables

Considered rules, openly sourced

  • Allow 30″ of table edge per person as a minimum, 36″ for comfort and 42″ where papers and laptops are spread out (Paul Downs seating guide; OFW sizing guide).
  • Rectangular and boat tables seat two people for every full spacing along their length, plus one at each end. This reproduces published charts: 48 × 96″ seats eight, 48 × 144″ seats ten.
  • Round tables seat their circumference divided by the spacing. At 36″ a 48″ round seats four and a 96″ round seats eight, as in Paul Downs’ chart.
  • Racetrack tables combine the straight sides with the curved ends. U and V arrangements seat the outer edge only, open toward a screen.
  • Width follows length: 36–42″ to six feet, rising to 60″ and beyond for tables over 22 feet.
  • Leave 42–48″ between the table edge and the wall so chairs can be drawn back and people can pass. OfficeSimpli plans four feet on every side.

How much space does each person need at a conference table?

Allow 30 inches per person as a minimum, 36 inches for comfort, and 42 inches when laptops and papers are spread out.

How much clearance should be behind chairs?

Plan 42–48 inches from the table edge to the wall so chairs can pull out and people can pass behind them.

What size conference table seats 10 people?
